From the Friedens Vol. Fire Company members and all associated with our organization, we say STAY SAFE!! Below are some helpful fire prevention tips and tricks to hopefully prevent a fire at your home or business.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are the most very part of your household fire safety. Did you know that 85% of fatal fires occur in residental homes. They occur in 29% of houses that have inoperable alarms, or no alarms. Friedens Fire would be kind enough to give you instructions on smoke detector info and placement. for other information and help you can follow this link: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/campaigns/smokealarms/alarms/

  • Have smoke detectors on all floors and both in and out of sleeping areas
  • Smoke detector placement in your house or business also makes a difference
  • Set a date to check/clean/test your smoke detectors

Pre-planned escape routes

Pre-planned fire escape routes are a vital key to house/business fire survival. These are plans that should be in place for all buildings. Knowing where to go and what to do during a fire is important.
  • Practice the plan with your family or co-workers every month
  • Make sure there are 2 ways out of each room
  • If needed purchase a window ladder and know where its located
  • Leave the building immediatly during a fire and take nothing with you (excluding role call books for schools)
  • Meet at your family or work places set destination
  • Stay out of the house when you are out

 Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are an important tool to also keep in your house. Most businesses may require these and like the workplace, you should be familar with what kind of extinguishers there.

  • Know what type of extinguishers you need or have
  • Know where your extinguishers are and be familar with what fires to use them on
  • Practice using them and going over them with kids and adults both
  • Learn the P.A.S.S (Pull the pin, Aim, the extinguisher, Squeeze the lever, Sweep the base of the fire) system and know how to apply it
